Case Study for Travel and Tourism Industry
Background
GlobalBest is a leading online reservation provider for hotel, motels and camping grounds.
Over 20 million reservations were made on the Internet in 2007 and the number is expected to double by 2009.
GlobalBest is hosting reservation systems for 5000+ hotels, motels and camping grounds (
small vendors)
for a minimal fee. In return, GlobalBest gets access to all the available inventories
(rooms, sites, etc) of the small vendors.
GlobalBest retains 20% of total charges for each reservation made on the
Internet for small vendors. Currently, the small vendors use terminal services to access
the reservation systems.
Problems
- As the number of small vendors grows, more and more server computers and terminal service licenses
have to be purchased and maintained. GlobalBest is running out of space for hosting the server
computers and maintenance costs for the servers are growing rapidly.
- Some small vendors have slow connections and are complaining about the performance.
- As the number of small vendors grows, more and more bandwidth has to been purchased.
Requirements
-
The thin client of the reservation systems can run on terminal services or small
vendor's computers.
- The reservation systems must run fast all the time.
- Deployment of the reservation systems must be very simple since most of the small vendors
are often not computer savvy .
Solutions
Use DB-WAN-XL to reduce the bandwidth utilization and improve the response time for all the small vendors.
- Install Datacenter Compression Server (DCS) to provide fast data access for small vendors.
- Switching most of small vendors from using terminal services to running the reservation
application locally through Branch Compression Server to improve overall performance and
reduce bandwidth utilization.
